Bugs

There are several ways to learn about bugs inexpensively, but concretely.

Easy Way to Collect Bugs
When the weather is warm, purchase a kiddie pool.  You will be amazed at how many bugs collect in it.

What to Do with the Bugs

Microscope
Look at them under a microscope.

Make Your Own Bug Book!

Take your bugs up to the local county extension office.  These folks will identify what type of bug you have in both the common name and the Latin name.  While at the county extension office have your young scholar or yourself write down the name of that particular insect on an index card and deposit one index card and one insect per zip lock baggie.  When you return home, have your young scholar lightly glue the bug to an index card where they have already written the common and Latin name for the bug.  Laminate the buggy index card.  Nicely tape or glue your laminated buggy index card to some pretty typing paper and place in a page protector.  Place page protector in a binder.

(Special Note:  You can do the same thing with flowers, leaves, seeds, etc.)
