Scavenger Hunt

Good day !  I am Katherine Browne from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  I understand that you have graciously volunteered to help me!  How kind and thoughtful of you! Keep your eyes open for you may spot my husband, the good Dr. Archibald Browne, and the twins — Penelope and Thaddeus Browne.  My eldest son, Cameron, who served in the army in the War of Independence, may appear too, but he has so many duties.

Anyway, enough introductions!  We need to get down to work.

Read each Boot Camp or Campaign on this page.  There are two separate hunts, one for those who have not yet passed their tenth birthday, and one for those who have passed this milestone.  To complete each Boot Camp or Campaign, search for the answer using the given clue.

Notice that you will be given a letter at the end of each Boot Camp or Campaign along your way.  The letters are clues to help you solve the Jumble Puzzle.  At the end of all your Boot Camp or Campaigns, you will need to put the letters in the correct order to learn the secret message.

Here is a sample of a JUMBLE puzzle.

You may have received the letters L E R E P E V A R U, and the clue may be:

I enjoy shaping gold, silver, tin and pewter with my hands.  I think my most famous piece is the Liberty Bowl.  One night I needed to make an important ride.  This ride became so important to our country, a poem was written about it!

                   __ __ __ __       __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __

And the answer to this JUMBLE is Paul Revere.

I pray that the One who guides all Boot Camp and Campaigns, whether on land or sea, will keep you safe!

Yours in His service,

Katherine Browne

                 Fife & Drum Corp                                        Patriot

9 & under                                            10 & above

Boot Camp #1
I see you have decided to take this perilous journey.  My, my but you are brave indeed!  I am sure that General Washington would love to have you in his Fife and Drum Corp.  Yet, in order to have such a noble, honorable, and trustworthy position, you need to prove that you have perseverance.

The first task on your journey will be to tell me the Presidential Oath of Office.  Be quick about it now and no dilly dallying.  If you see my twins, Penelope and Thaddeus Browne, let them know they must come home to do their chores.  I cannot have them about the streets of Philadelphia all day watching the redcoats parade!

Clue #1
Stop trying to dig out that cobblestone in the street with the toe of your shoe!  It is not pleasant to walk down the street only to sink in a big hole where a cobblestone should be!  Now if you will leave the cobblestone be, I'll give you a clue.

Jumble Puzzle Letter: S

Boot Camp #2
My mother would say, "Well done!"  My name is Penelope Browne.  My mother needed to help my father nurse several wounded soldiers.  She asked me to stop by and tell you the next boot camp task.

What was General Washington's pet name for Martha Washington?

I know, I know, it is so hard to think that a tall, statuesque, formal man like George Washington would have a pet name for anybody!  Then, again, adults can be hard to figure out sometimes!

Clue #2
I have to polish all the everyday pewter and silver before my mother arrives home. If you see my twin brother, Thaddeus, tell him that he better return home FAST to chop wood.  Oh, before I forget, take this note my mother jotted down for you to help you on your journey.

Jumble Puzzle Letter: S

Boot Camp #3
Well met!  I see that my daughter was able to help you!  That is good news indeed.  Sometimes as a doctor's wife, I help my husband in his seemingly never ending chores.

My daughter Penelope did an excellent job in polishing, don't you agree?  I see she forgot to dust in her desire to meet the family friend, the Grackle.  I can truly understand that — we all dearly love the Grackle.

Oh dear oh dear, we cannot stand here all day talking!  You have a journey you must complete!  Alliteration is so much fun! Your task is to give me an example of a Presidents' Day alliteration.

Clue #3
Don't look so worried!  I have come to enjoy your company.  Here give this note to our pastor at church.  He has a large library and is always willing to help young ones learn more.  Even though this is a Christian duty, it is also our pastor's enjoyment.

Jumble Puzzle Letter: S

Boot Camp #4
Alliteration is so much fun!  Our family enjoys participating in it.  My son, Cameron, is especially addicted to playing alliteration games.

Tell me if you can what the good Reverend James Caldwell told his men when their wadding gave out in Springfield, Massachusetts.  Wadding is the paper soldiers put their musket balls and gun powder in before it is rammed down.  Why would this be considered funny?

Clue #4
I am sure that if you go to the church where Reverend James Caldwell ran into in Springfield and speak to the choirmaster you will be able to complete your Boot Camp task.  What you are uncertain of the directions? That would make this journey much more difficult.  Here take this map to guide you.

Jumble Puzzle Letter: B

Boot Camp #5
Phew!  Chopping wood for the fireplaces in our home is a lot of work!  I am glad you stopped by so I may rest awhile!  I understand you met my twin sister, Penelope.  My name is Thaddeus.  Mother told me to tell you that your next Boot Camp task on your journey is to provide the lyrics to the song Hail to the Chief.

This is the song that is played for the president of the United States.  Most people do not know that the tune Hail to the Chief even has lyrics!

I had best get back to work and get this wood chopped before my parents return.

Clue #5
My goodness!  You sure do make a racket! What is all this fuss about anyway? All right, here take this clue to help you with your journey, but please stop that screeching!

Jumble Puzzle Letter: E

Boot Camp #6
Good evening to you.  My name is Major Oliver Crippen.  The colonial British government has quartered me in the Browne household.  The Browne's are quite hospitable and courteous to me, but I know they resent the British government forcing a soldier to live in their home.  It is quite understandable.  Oh well, let us carry on with your Boot Camp training.

The rain is certainly coming down hard.  Splat!  Splat!  Splat!  Drip!  Drip! Drip!  Kaboom!  Kersplat!  Splish!  Splash! Tell me, if you can, what literary special effect has words that imitate sounds or sounds that are linked with objects?   In short, this may be considered literary sound effects!

Clue #6
Don't start acting all uppity toward me simply because I am what YOU call a Lobster Back!  To show you loyal citizens of King George III and mother England may be generous, go here for aid in your task.

Jumble Puzzle Letter: R

Boot Camp #7
I see you have met our forced house guest, Major Oliver Crippen.  He is All right in his own way, but I prefer to pick my own house guests and not have them selected for me thank you very much.  Oh excuse me, let me introduce myself.  I am Dr. Archibald Browne.  I am not sure where my wife is right now ... odd that ...

Let me see you are in Boot Camp if I am not mistaken trying to get into the coveted Fife & Drum Corp.  Am I correct?

Ah, excellent.  Your next duty to perform in Boot Camp is to tell me the author and publisher's name of the book The List.

Clue #7
I have heard how cooperative you have been with my wife and family and because I highly favor The List and think it a tremendous book, I will give you this clue to complete your task.

Jumble Puzzle Letter: O

Boot Camp #8
It is almost time for us to say farewell. You have become so dear to me ... almost like you were one of my own children! Your parents must be so proud of you! Let us not dwell on that right now or I shall cry!  Let us be about your task for Boot Camp.

To whom does George Washington address his farewell address on 17 September 1796?

Clue #8
What a dear Patriot you are!  Your behavior has been most impressive!  I have not had to admonish you about being prideful or stuck up after you have successfully completed a task.  You have been gracious and kind to my family. What a delight and blessing you must be to your family!  Here, take this clue. I am sure it will help!

Jumble Puzzle Letter: Y

Boot Camp #9
Here is your last Boot Camp task.  What a delight it has been to know you. My entire family has truly enjoyed your presence and know that you will make it into the Fife and Drum Corp.  I will rest more securely at night knowing that my dear son Cameron will be served by tremendous young Patriots like yourself! It is truly a relief and comfort to me!

Now for your last Boot Camp task.  Tell me what is the author of the nursery rhyme of this period going to get at Lady Washington's house?

Clue #9
Nursery rhymes are so much fun!  Don't you agree?  They truly help to remember history from long past in a fun way.  If you will take this clue, I am SURE you will find the answer to this Boot Camp task most quickly!

Jumble Puzzle Letter: T

Well done my young Patriot.  Here is your last duty.  If you pass, you will be welcomed with open arms in the Drum and Fife Corp!

George Washington and his associates came to visit me in my home in Philadelphia to sew a symbol for our country that I am sure you are familiar with.  I am very grateful for their desire to give business to a widow saying that my work with a needle and thread was well known.  Do you know who I am?

May our Lord bless you on your last task,

Katherine Browne

Campaign #1
Phew!  Even though my kitchen is in what you would call the basement to keep us cool, it can still get mighty hot!  Let me sit down for a minute.  I know I should not be tired and I slept in until 5 am and it is not quite time for our midday meal!  My thoughts keep returning to my eldest son, Cameron, who serves in the Army.  I had best get my mind back on my work; otherwise, I'll be mooning about the place all day long!

Oh, yes, I almost forgot.  George Washington needs you to secure for him what the Presidential Oath of office is and what Scripture will he place his hand on in Holy Writ while taking the oath?

Be quick about it now.  By the way, if you should see my husband, Dr. Archibald Browne, while you are out and about, let him know that we are having his favorite meal for midday.

Clue #1
What ? are you still here?  Do not become anxious or nervous!  That is no way for a brave Patriot to behave!  This map to the library should help you complete this journey.

Jumble Puzzle Letter: N

Campaign #2
My father has given me some copywork to accomplish before he and mother return from tending wounded soldiers.  It is from George Washington's Rules of Civility and Decent Behaviour In Company and Conversation.  It is said to have been originally penned and used by the Huguenots in France while teaching their children, but no one is sure.

Anyway, in my copy of Washington's Rules of Civility and Decent Behaviour In Company and Conversation, I spilt something on it and I can no longer read 28th, 29th and the 41st rules.  I would truly appreciate it if you could help me out!

Clue #2
Oh ... who am I?  I am most sorry, I did not mean to be rude.  I am Thaddeus Browne.  My mother asked me to give you this pamphlet from Dr. Benamin Franklin 's personal library.   I think it will help you on your campaign.

Jumble Puzzle Letter: 0

Campaign #3
You are doing remarkably well on this rigourous expedition!  Thaddeus is most grateful that you were able to help him on his copywork assignment that his father had given him.  I must say that it was mighty kind of you!

Do you have sufficient rest before continuing on your campaign?  Good!  This campaign will be quite strenuous!  It is most important that you are well rested before you begin.

Are you familiar with the greatly esteemed good Doctor Warren?  He was a courageous man.  Your expedition, should you decide to continue, is to tell me Warren's Address.

Clue #3
Warren's Address is considered quite inspiring.  What?  You have never heard of it! Oh my!  Do not fear.  Take this note to my husband, Dr. Archibald Browne.  I am sure he must have a copy of it somewhere on his person.

Jumble Puzzle Letter: G

Campaign #4
Good day to you!  My name is Penelope Browne.  I hear you have already met my twin brother, Thaddeus.  I understand that you have been faithful and trustworthy on the previous tasks of this campaign.

May I trust you now?

All right then.  Do not let me down.  More importantly, do not let General Washington down!  Tell me if you can what is General Washington's pet name for his wife, Martha, and on Whom does he confidently rely?

Clue #4
Be careful of the Redcoats — they are everywhere!  We have several special couriers that run between the lines all the time.  If you will but journey to Paul Revere's home, I am sure he may connect you with the correct courier so that you may accomplish your expedition!

Jumble Puzzle Letter: E

Campaign #5
I understand you met my daughter, Penelope. She can be quite a handful sometimes.  My husband, Dr. Archibald Browne, says that is because Penelope is too much like her parents!

How is your singing voice this fine afternoon? The choirmaster at church is in a tizzy.  Many are just recovering from a terrible, mysterious illness and have quite forgotten the lyrics to some of the songs the choir will be singing on Sunday.

Your task is to provide the lyrics for the first and second verse of Jesus Shall Reign and The Law Commands and Makes Us Know.

Clue #5
Psssssssssssstt ... my name is the Grackle.  I am a close family friend of Brownes.  In fact, I am honored that they consider me to be an important part of their family.  You must be quiet ... Tories and Redcoats are all over!  If you give this note to the good Isaac Watts, I am sure he will help you on your campaign.

Jumble Puzzle Letter: A

Campaign #6
La La La La La La La !!!  Uh ... hum ... let me try that scale again.  Oh, excuse me!  I did not see you there.  My name is Dr. Archibald Browne, I am Katherine's husband.   My wife seems to have disappeared somewhere ... that is quite odd ... this normally does not happen ... I wonder ...

Several men will be getting together to sing this evening and I am warming my voice up to sing a well-belovéd Christian song entitled Our God, Our Help In Ages Past.  I do not know why I am bothering, though, for I cannot seem to recall the first three verses.  Could you help me with them?

Clue #6
My wife has great confidence in your ability. She left this note on the mantlepiece and I see it is addressed to you.  See, it says To the Brave Young Patriot to Help on the Campaign. I am sure this is meant for you to help you with your task.

Jumble Puzzle Letter: S

Campaign #7
My you are prompt in completing your tasks! Let me just place my cloak on the wall peg. I had to ... step out for a moment ...

I see by my husband's note that you met him while I was away and that you have quite impressed him with your demeanor, good manners and deportment. Let me tell you young Patriot that is not an easy task to accomplish with my husband.

Tell me if you can, young Patriot, to whom is George Washington's Farewell address given to and when was it given?  Moreover, tell me why is George Washington making this speech?  What is about to happen?

Clue #7
Let's be about our business.  Oh dear neither Penelope nor Thaddeus are here.  Since I was away longer than I expected, I will need your assistance with the evening meal.  Place these spices in the kettle over yonder hanging over the fireplace.  While you wait for it to broil you may want to take this note to help you with your task.

Jumble Puzzle Letter: O

Campaign #8
Good day to you !!!  It is me, Penelope Browne!  Oh I am so glad you remember me! I was not able to get home in time from my outing with the Grackle to help mother prepare the meal.  Thank you ever so much for standing in for me! That was very kind of you!

One of my favorite books in the whole wide world is The List.  There is plenty of excitement, adventure, famous folk and even a mystery is involved!  Your task for this Campaign is to tell me the author and publisher's name of the book, The List.

Clue #8
Pssssssssssttttttttt ... I'm the Grackle, the Browne's family friend.  Here, take this note to help you solve this task.  Do not forget to avoid the Red Coats!

Jumble Puzzle Letter: R

Campaign #9
Thaddeus !!!  Oh Thaddeus !!!  Where are you? I need you to take this broth to the minister's wife who has been ailing lately.  Have you seen my Thaddeus?  Oh dear, he has gone with my husband to help tend to the sick and wounded?

Whatever shall I do, I must complete so many tasks that must be done before sundown! Will you will take this broth?  What Christian charity you display!  While you are on your way to the parsonage, quote to me in full Article Two, Section I, from the Constitution.

Clue #9
What bravery and courage you demonstrate. Why you did not even quake in your boots when hearing the task for Campaign #9.  Since you have demonstrated such faithfulness, take this pass through the Patriot lines to solve your puzzle.

Jumble Puzzle Letter: M

Campaign #10
Ma !  Oh Ma!  I'm home!  Ma where are you? Hmmmmm ... that's funny ... I wonder where my mother could be?

My mother sent me on many errands.  I heard she sent you with a pass through the Patriot's lines on your last Campaign task!  How awesome!  I wish I could have gone with you! I love adventure ... that's me Adventurous Penelope!

I wish I could go with you on your next Campaign, but I see by this list my mother has left for me to accomplish that I will be much too busy to go with you.

Your task is to repeat in full the last paragraph in George Washington's Farewell to the Army.

Clue #10
Do not worry.  Let me introduce you to Paul Revere and he will let you ride behind him on his way to a Sons of Liberty meeting.  If you ask him politely, I am sure Mr. Revere will introduce you to someone who was there and heard what Washington said.

Jumble Puzzle Letter: G

Campaign #11
I am so sorry I was unable to be here to give you your last clue, but I was called away unexpectedly.

Our family absolutely loves tongue twisters. Don't you?  Your last Campaign task is to give an example of a Presidents' Day alliteration.

Clue #11
I have really come to admire your perseverance while you were working to solve you Campaign tasks.  Well done!  Your parents must be oh so proud of you!  Let me tell you I shall rest assured more safely at night knowing that all my children are safe with the likes of you, young Patriot, ready to pick up and defend the torch of liberty!
Take this to help you find the answer to your task.

Jumble Puzzle Letter: E

So here we are at long last.  This is your final task.  Solve the Jumble Puzzle.

I was a neighbor and good friend of George Washington. Thomas Jefferson used several phrases and the ideas of my Fairfax Resolves that I wrote for Virginia to compose the Declaration of Independence.  My good friend, Patrick Henry, and I were very concerned about the Constitution.  Indeed, it would never have been ratified if we kept speaking out against it. Finally, those wanting to hurry up and pass the Constitution agreed to having a Bill of Rights to quiet Patrick Henry and myself down.  Do you know who I am?

___  ___  ___  ___  ___   ___

___  ___  ___  ___  ___

May our Lord bless you on your last task,
