When:  13-15 June 2004

Where:  Indianapolis, Indiana

Pinckney-Shortt Resolution:
Pinckney-Shortt Resolution ... all officers and members of the Southern Baptist Convention and the churches associated with it to remove their children from the government schools and see to it that they receive a thoroughly Christian education, for the glory of God, the good of Christ's church, and the strength of their own commitment to Jesus.

Submitted:
Proposal submitted to the 10-member SBC Resolutions Committee April 29th 2004

Demographics:
        16.3 million members
42,000 churches affiliated with the convention
        650 schools
SBC is the nation's second-largest denomination
resolutions approved by the convention are nonbinding
all member churches are autonomous in their ministries

Issue:
Bruce Shortt:  "Whether it's voted up or down this time is really not the issue.  What we have to do is simply get a hearing for the issue and begin the debate."
Southern Baptists:  Pull Your Kids Out of Public School (Journalspace)

Question:  Do I have to be a Southern Baptist in order to be concerned?
Answer:    NO!  It is the duty of ALL Christians to lift their brothers and sisters before the Lord!
Christians are to encourage one another.  Take the time to write Pinckney and Short thank you letters!

Special Note:
The convention already has passed resolutions supporting homeschooling (1997) and Christian education (1999).

... all officers and members of the Southern Baptist Convention and the churches associated with it to remove their children from the government schools and see to it that they receive a thoroughly Christian education, for the glory of God, the good of Christ's church, and the strength of their own commitment to Jesus.

Government schools are by their own confession humanistic and secular in their instruction, and the education offered by the government schools is officially Godless.

... the millions of children in government schools spend seven hours a day, 180 days a year being taught that God is irrelevant to every area of life

Many Christian children in government schools are converted to an anti-Christian worldview rather than evangelizing their schoolmates.

Just as it would be foolish for the warrior to give his arrows to his enemies, it is foolish for Christians to give their children to be trained in schools run by the enemies of God.

... government schools are "adopting curricula and policies teaching that the homosexual lifestyle is acceptable."

Interesting Facts

Research indicates that 70% of teens who are involved in a church youth group will stop attending church within two years of their [government] high school graduation ... ... the primary reasons [for Christian youth not attending church within two years of government high school] are, first, our failure as Christian parents and churches and, second, the intentional, persistent, and highly effective effort by anti-theists to use [government] public schools to lead children away from their parents and from the church.
(We are Losing Our Children by T.C. Pinckney)

... the American Humanist Association understands the importance of capturing the children for they have written:  "In order to capture this nation, one has to totally remove moral and spiritual values and absolutes from the thinking of the child. The child has to think that there is no standard of right and wrong, that truth is relative, and that diversity is the only absolute to be gained."
(We are Losing Our Children by T.C. Pinckney quoting The Reconstruction of Religion by Charles A. Ellwood, Ph.D., Professor of Sociology, U. Of Missouri © 1923)

Most Southern Baptists and most Southern Baptist churches are failing to obey God's commands regarding our children. Yes, we take them to Sunday worship and Sunday School. Yes, they may also attend AWANAs or another church-centered youth program. They may even have Bible study at home.  But two or three hours on Sunday and 20 minutes or so of Bible study at home are overpowered by 30 or more hours a week in anti-Christian government schools and the constant pagan media bombardment which may add up to another 10, 20, 30, or more hours per week.  Now of course many schoolteachers are Christians. And may God bless them as they do what they can. But they are strictly limited by school policy, humanist textbooks, programs teaching the validity of homosexuality, "make up your own minds" approaches to morality, "safe sex" instruction, and on and on ... We have failed because we have been willfully, blissfully ignorant ... and satisfied in our ignorance ... We have failed because we have been afraid to offend people. So we have chosen to offend God rather than men.
(We are Losing Our Children by T.C. Pinckney)

... [government] public schools are "harmful not just spiritually and worldview-wise, but terrible academically. The U.S. has been going down on the roster of nations around the world in academic achievement of its students for 20 or 30 years now."
Baptist Leader Pushes Homeschooling (CNN)

If Baptist parents were to comply with the resolution, the [government] public school system probably would collapse, said Pinckney, who publishes The Baptist Banner.  "I think that would be one of the finest things that can happen for the United States," he said.
Baptist Leader Pushes Homeschooling (CNN)

Bruce Shortt:  At this point, there are many, many pastors and parents who need to be educated about our obligation to provide a Christian education to our children ... In time, most SBC members are going to understand better that the little red schoolhouse has really become the little white sepulcher, and it's a seething cauldron of spiritual, moral and academic pathologies.
Southern Baptists:  Pull Your Kids Out of Public School (Journalspace)

Bruce Shortt:  The issue is this the government schools are killing our children morally, spiritually and academically.  The question we confront as Christian parents is, how dead do we want our children to be?"
Southern Baptists:  Pull Your Kids Out of Public School (Journalspace)

Approximately 85% of Christian parents send their children to government schools which promotes "spiritual blindness".  According to Bruce Shortt:   If you had a congregation where 85 percent of the people had a drug problem or an adultery problem, you'd hear about it from the pulpit and yet in most churches right now, this is an issue that's not discussed.
Southern Baptists:  Pull Your Kids Out of Public School (Journalspace)

Shortt predicts if 10-15 percent of children are pulled from government schools, the "$500 billion behemoth" will be de-legitimized and will collapse financially both results he welcomes.
